Clinical Trials Before new medications, or medical devices, can be marketed they have to be thoroughly researched through a series of tests called clinical trials. These trials determine the safety and effectiveness of medications, devices, diagnostic products, and treatment regimens and may be used for prevention, treatment, diagnosis or for relief of symptoms in a disease. All clinical trials are approved by Health Canada and an independent ethics committee to ensure they are conducted safely with minimal risk to the patients. It is completely voluntary for a patient to participate in a clinical trial. At Wharton Medical Clinic a team of dedicated research professionals, which include Physicians, Study Coordinators, Nurses and Technicians, work closely with patients to ensure they are thoroughly informed, and have ample opportunity to ask questions before, and during, participation in a trial. Claire Robbins – Clinical Trials Manager In 1997 Claire graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland with her BSc in Applied Biosciences. Upon moving to Canada, in 2003, she worked for a Contract Research Organization in Mississauga, conducting clinical trials in Allergy and Asthma. Claire has conducted trials in many therapeutic areas including Obesity, Hypertension, Cholesterolemia, Stroke Prevention, COPD, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Diabetes.
